. what happened in arizona near the border with mexico? and a choice. beginsn take advil, and maybe have to take up to four in a day. or take aleve, which can relieve pain all day with just two pills. good eye. >>> less than 24 hours from now with the election just five weeks away, president obama, mitt romney are going to face off in their debate. an estimated 50 million people are expected to watch. both men have been prepping very heavily. they know the stakes. history has shown that presidential debates can shift a race. joining me now is alan schroeder, professor of the school of journalism in northeastern university in boston, author of "presidential debates, 50 years of high risk tv." also, patrick milsap, republican strategists who served as chief of staff in newt gingrich's presidential campaign. patrick, you say newt gingrich's famous pious baloney line was one of his strongest hits against mitt romney during the primary debates. i want to play that for our viewers who don't remember. take a look. >> can we drop a little bit of the pious baloney? the fact is you ran in '94 and

which would be done by executive order not legislation, i would reinstate the mexico city policy. >> affirmative action, civil rights group rally as the supreme court revisit also race can be a factor in college admissions. and won't you be my neighbor? late night's jimmy fallon visits mr. romney's neighborhood. >> it's a beautiful day in the neighborhood. beautiful day for a neighbor. would you be mine? could you be mine? hello, neighbor. you see this? it's called a wallet. inside of a wallet, oh, that's where money goes. now, do you know what money is? i'm guessing no, because you're watching public television. >> good day. i'm andrea mitchell live in washington. the house republican hearings on last month's terrorist attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi are under way now on capitol hill. chairman darrell issa opened the hearings demanding answers from the state department about their response to the incident. as well as the amount of security personnel in place before september 11th. >> we know that the tragedy in benghazi ended as it did. we now know that, in fact, it was

is that, you know here, did say he would reinstate the mexico city policy which would keep federal funding from going to fund abortions. that's something we do like. but there's also a difference you have to note from a candidate. mitt is doing something smart here. he's saying, look, i know what i believe but here's the things i'm going to be able to do as president. contrast that with barack obama who made all these wild promises and pledges and 00 come through a -- follow through on any of them and you see kind of a pragmatic mitt romney who says this is what i believe in but this is what i know i can accomplish. i'm not going to overpromise here. >> your response? >> i appreciate my fellow south carolinian's comments about policy but here is a fact. so the capital of japan is tokyo. we know thesing a fact. here is the fact. not a single taxpayer dollar goes to fund abortions. not one. not even a cent. not even a penny. not one. the theory of reinstituting the policy is a farce. mitt romney was pro-choice. now -- then pro-life. then this morning he was pro-choice and now andrea is sayin

spill in the gulf of mexico, more oil is surfacing, contaminating the water meter disaster site. coast guard officials report a slick 50 miles off the coast of louisiana matches exactly the crude oil that poured out of bp's well in 2010 after the deep water horizon rig exploded. that disaster sent more than 200 million gallons of oil into the water. the coast guard reports the newly discovered oil sheen will not hit land and it's too small to try to recover. >>> this news comes as we've gotten word that bp is close to what may be a multi-billion-dollar settlement with the u.s. justice department. a settlement related to that 2010 disaster. the reporting comes from the "wall street journal" which our parent company owns. the journal reports people familiar with the talks say both sides are closing in on the deal, but nothing is locked down, though the dollar figures are somewhere between 8 and $12 billion. >>> one month after the attack on the american consulate in benghazi in libya, the united states is now sending a new top diplomat to libya. now we're learning more about what the c.i

would reinstitute the mexico city policy, which would end federal funding for abortions overseas in other countries. right now he's talking about what voters care about, which is jobs, the economy, rising deficits. >> i understand. hang on. hang on. hang on. ron, we're not going to do talking points here. i'm asking you a very simple question. >> i'm not doing talking points. >> i didn't ask you about the economy. we can get to that. what did he mean in his statement that seems to be contradictory statements? >> i just told you what he meant. he said that his agenda is not going to be focused on abortion. it's going to be -- he did not say it was going to be focused on other issues, but obviously it's going to be. that's why he talked about the economy, what voters care about in these 27 days. >> romney was criticized for changing views on key issues and former president clinton had something to say about it. take a listen. >> i had a different reaction to that first debate than a lot of people did. i thought, wow! here is old moderate mitt. where have you been, boy? i missed you

and also i've indicated i'll reverse the mexico city position of the president, reinstate the mexico city policy which keeps us from using foreign aide for abortions overseas. >> our position is unified, consistent and hasn't changed. >> what is your position? >> you'll find -- i'm sure you'll find out as these -- >> were you upset that he said that to the des moines register? >> no, no. no positions have changed. our position is very consistent. >> ana, you heard from both of them. romney has moved to the center, appears to have moved from the center. could it backfire both with his base and perhaps undecideds who don't think he holds sincere beliefs? and even with women, aafter hearing that comment from the des moines register and then saying something that appears to be different. could that change that? >> don, you know i haven't been mitt romney's biggest defender or biggest fan but i don't really see a great inconsistency in what he said and what he has said. he said he won't be pursuing legislation. i'm glad to hear that. frank frankly the difference between taking executive action

i've indicated i'll reverse the mexico city position of the president. i'll reinstate the mexico city policy, which prevents us using foreign aid for abortions overseas. >> all right, bret, a two-part question here. does this put social issues back on the table for tonight's debate? and the second part of that question, do you expect the democrats to seize on the flip-flop label here? because we seem to see two positions in two days here from mitt romney. >> well, you know, it may put social issues back on the table. it depends what martha does in the debate tonight. i'm not sure this is an issue that the democrats -- you know, it may put the women's issue back on the table in terms of their war on women that they have been litigating earlier in the campaign. so they may use it again as a wedge issue. but this election is about jobs and the economy. and i think as long as congressman ryan focusing on that tonight, he'll be able to litigate a debate he wants to. if joe biden is able to put that issue back on the table, then it might put congressman ryan on his heels. >> all right.
